The two lead characters on one of TV's biggest shows may live on outside Empire.
When we last left Empire, Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) stormed off at Hakeem's (Bryshere Gray) disaster of a wedding -- the same wedding that actually ended up being Lucious' (Terrence Howard) marriage to Anika (Grace Gealey).
"There's such history between them," said executive producer Ilene Chaiken at the Television Critics Association previews Monday. "Cookie tends to forgive the unforgivable. We come back in season three wondering if she could ever be done."
While producers wouldn't give up details on what we'll see going into next season, Cookie will start Season 3 demanding more for herself, again. "Cookie fights for her own agency within Empire...fighting for opportunities to start over," Chaiken said. "It always comes back to family; there's no getting way from it."
In the meantime, there's lots of discussion about how the lead characters on the hit show might fare in another part of the universe. First, there's room for a crossover between Empire and Lee Daniels' other musical show, Star and possibly even more.
"There are potential spin-offs with Lucious and Cookie's characters, sure," Chaiken said, adding that they think about spinoff ideas "all the time." Of course, Cookie and Lucious would have to make it through Season 3 without killing each other first, which, knowing those two isn't out of the realm of possibility.
Empire Season three debuts Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 9/8c on FOX.
