Fusion, the startup online and cable news joint venture of ABC News and Univision aimed at U.S. Hispanics, hired journalist Jane Spencer — one of the founding editors of the Daily Beast — as editor-in-chief of its digital platforms.
Spencer was one of the founding editors of the Daily Beast website started by Tina Brown in 2008, where she served as managing editor and executive editor until 2012. Prior to that, she was a correspondent for the Wall Street Journal in Hong Kong and New York covering a variety of beats.
“Jane’s enthusiasm is contagious and she has the proven ability to build a startup into a thriving editorial operation, which will help take Fusion to the next level,” Fusion CEO Isaac Lee said in a memo to staff announcing her hiring.
Other recent hires for Fusion’s digital team have included Reuters columnist Felix Salmon, Jezebel founder Anna Holmes, former Upworthy exec Hong Qu as CTO, and Mariana Santos from U.K. newspaper The Guardian, who is leading a newly formed interactive unit focused on creating micro-videos for platforms like Instagram and Vine.
Also on the Fusion team: journalist Ryan Nerz was hired as chief cannabis correspondent.
