Looks like we’re closer to a Mad About You revival. Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser have closed their deals with Sony Pictures TV to reprise their roles as married New York couple Paul and Jamie Buchman, sources have confirmed. Talks had been ongoing for several months.
Mad About You, co-created by Reiser and Danny Jacobson, ran seven seasons from 1992 to 1999 on NBC and won multiple Emmy and Golden Globe Awards. Sony TV also produced a Mad About You adaptation in China. It has been reported that the revival would reconnect audiences with present-day Paul and Jamie, who are suffering from a case of empty nest syndrome as their 17-year-old daughter Mabel goes to college.
In an appearance today on Ellen, Hunt revealed she and Reiser have been talking about a possible reboot and are hoping it can happen. “It’s not for sure yet, I hope it is” Hunt told host Ellen DeGeneres. “I will say, Paul Reiser is in my kitchen a good amount because we’re talking about how to make it and not wreck it, because we’re proud of what we did, so..I hope so.”
The revival has not been shopped yet, though obviously the genre is hot now with revivals of popular shows from the ’80s and ’90s such as Will & Grace, Fuller House, Murphy Brown and Roseanne.
It also was announced today that Hunt has left her longtime agency CAA for UTA.
Reiser is repped by Gersh and Del Shaw.
Entertainment Weekly was first to report the deals had closed.
