UPDATED, May 13: We indeed will have the first season ever with CBS introducing only single-camera comedy series: Life In Pieces and Angel From Hell. I hear multi-camera comedy pilot The Half Of It is no longer in the running for a midseason order. After giving an hour of comedies to a drama, with Supergirl set for 8-9 PM Mondays in the fall, CBS has three returning comedy series on the bench — 2 Broke Girls, which is not on the fall schedule for the first time in its history, Mike & Molly and The Odd Couple — so it doesn’t need another half-hour backup. But CBS drama pilot Doubt is still very much alive with a desire to reshoot the pilot. Some of the roles will be recast.
Also shrinking is the list of passed-on pilots that have a chance for a pickup on another network. Two CBS pilots, drama Sneaky Pete and comedy Super Clyde are being shopped, and there is some cable interest in Sneaky Pete (AMC play would be logical given Breaking Bad star Bryan’s Cranston’s role as co-creator/executive producer), with NBC’s The Curse Of The Fuentes Women also a possibility. There has been cable interest in Sneaky Pete. I hear the CW’s Tales From The Darkside reboot could not land a new home.
PREVIOUS May 11: Technically, all broadcast pilots not picked up to series are alive until end of June, when the options on their actors expire, and many of them will be shopped. Here are a few that have a future at the networks that ordered them.
Fox has left two pilots in play, drama Studio City and single-camera comedy 48 Hours ‘Til Monday. Both had strong early buzz and, while not getting orders, will be revisited after the upfronts for a possible midseason consideration. There also has been talk about possible redevelopment of Fantasy Life as the network liked the concept of a fantasy league comedy and star Kevin Connolly but that is less tangible, possible for the next cycle.
CBS has at least two pilots in consideration in different ways. Multi-camera divorce comedy The Half Of It is in serious contention for a midseason pickup. Meanwhile, I hear there have been discussions for drama Doubt to reshoot the pilot.
There is little action at ABC and NBC. The former may be taking a second look at the NBA comedy, while latter might look to redevelop comedy pilot Strange Calls as a one-hour.
