A U.S. District Court in California has ordered unlicensed video-streaming service Nitro TV to stop pirating streaming video, including movies and pirated TV station signals — and pay more than $50 million dollars for willfully infringing the copyrights of almost 2,000 “works.”

Most of ATSC 3.0’s audio delay in the U.S. is attributable to the same factors that have held back the rollout of UHD content: there is still a small base of NextGen TV-capable sets; the distribution chain from networks to stations is not fully ready for new formats; and broadcasters are somewhat hamstrung in experimenting with their 3.0 content because of FCC rules that require them to effectively simulcast their 1.0 programming. But despite that, progress is being made.

Evoca TV, a service that uses a blend of ATSC 3.0 broadcast signals and Internet streaming to deliver inexpensive pay-TV packages in a handful of US markets, needs more funding to avoid a shutdown. The company told subscribers via email Wednesday and in a message posted on its website that, should it be unable to raise more capital, “we are sad to say that Evoca TV will discontinue operations and programming on Dec. 31, 2022. … We will continue service for our subscribers through December but will not accept new orders at this time.”

The company promotes him from engineering director of its WMUR Manchester, N.H. He will share direct engineering oversight across the station group with fellow regional director of engineering Greg Turner.

Distributed production can deliver more of the angles, replays, graphics and insights that viewers want while tuned into a game, match or other competition. To maximize what goes on screen, supporting technology must use automation and metadata to make it easy for producers to access exactly what they need to work on at exactly the right time.

Some people turn on closed captions because they like how it helps them understand the plotlines of shows and movies, and multitask in front of the tube. Others turn them on because they can’t hear what actors are saying. That doesn’t always mean they are hard of hearing. Muddled audio is the top reason why more people are watching video with on-screen text, according to a May survey commissioned by language-teaching app Preply. As more video-production studios embrace advanced audio formats for at-home content, not every device can keep up. Plenty of viewers can’t keep up, either.

The FCC has voted unanimously on rules banning the importation and sale of communications equipment that could pose a threat to national security. The FCC has already banned the use of such equipment in U.S. networks that get subsidy money from the government, but now is banning it entirely and at the FCC certification level.
