WCVB Named Broadcast Partner for 114th NAACP National Convention

Hearst’s ABC affiliate WCVB Boston and the NAACP announced that WCVB has been named the exclusive local broadcast partner of this summer’s 114th NAACP National Convention. The convention takes place in Boston on July 26 through Aug.  1, and the partnership includes exclusive broadcast, digital, and streaming access to much of the convention’s programming, events and speakers. The joint announcement was made by Kyle I. Grimes, WCVB president and general manager, and Trovon Williams, NAACP senior vice president of marketing and communications.

Grimes said: “WCVB is honored to partner with the NAACP on its 114th National Convention. It’s an important forum that brings the community together to reflect, learn, and move forward on a united front in the areas of social change and civil rights. Hosting this impactful event here in Boston is an exciting opportunity for the city, and we look forward to sharing all the compelling stories from this year’s convention with the community across our media platforms.”

Williams said: “The NAACP is thrilled to revisit our Boston roots during the 114th National Convention this July. This partnership with Boston’s own WCVB multiplies that excitement. Convention is the place where our advocacy is propelled toward actions. These actions only happen in Boston, across the Commonwealth, and even across the country, when the community is well-informed. This partnership signifies a powerful alliance between advocacy and community. Together, we will inform, inspire and empower our brothers and sisters in the ongoing fight for civil rights and social justice.”

“This year’s theme of ‘Thriving Together’ is an inclusive and inspiring mission that has long been at the core of both the NAACP’s and WCVB’s commitment to public service,” said Tanisha M. Sullivan, Esq., NAACP Boston branch president. “There will be a great deal of important content coming from the convention that will be critical to our community, and WCVB Channel 5 is an ideal media partner to make sure this information reaches the widest audience.”

Throughout the convention, WCVB will provide live anchoring and reporting in newscasts from key locations including the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center and Boston Park Plaza. CityLine, the station’s award-winning urban news magazine, will present a sneak peek of the much-anticipated event, devoting its entire Sunday, July 23rd show to the NAACP National Convention. The show will focus on current social justice and policy issues confronting the NAACP locally and nationally, and local impact of the convention.

In addition, WCVB’s nightly program Chronicle will broadcast live on July 27 from the convention and will have a series of interviews with NAACP local and national leadership. WCVB will also livestream several of the NAACP convention activities on its various platforms including WCVB.com, its mobile app, and Very Local Boston. In addition, a number of WCVB on-air journalists will participate in many of the convention’s events and programming as hosts and moderators.
