While many shows were dragged to new lows in the session ending June 7 by massive preemption for coverage of the George Floyd memorial in Minneapolis, a tense day of passionate protests around the country and the ongoing pandemic, magazines as a group refused to decline.
In fact, the high-flying mags were the only sector in first-run syndication in which everything was steady to higher amid severe losses elsewhere.
Inside Edition inched up 4% to a 2.6 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, followed closely by big-sister show Entertainment Tonight, which jumped 9% to a 2.5. In the key women 25-54 demo, Inside and ET were up 25% and 11%, respectively.
Access Hollywood and TMZ hung tough at a 1.2 and a 1.0, respectively, with both surging 20% in women 25-54.
While Extra notched the largest household rating percentage gain in the Big 6, shooting up 13% to a 0.9 and improving 25% in women 25-54, Daily Mail TV was right behind, holding its ground at a 0.8.
By comparison, among talk shows, Live with Kelly and Ryan was the only program of the 14 in the category to move up, forging ahead 5% to a first-place 2.0.
Dr. Phil, which featured encore episodes for nearly half the week, took second place, but got plastered with preemptions and fell 25% to a new season low 1.5.
Further back, Ellen DeGeneres dropped 14% to a new season low 1.2, while Maury slid 9% to a new season low 1.0, tying an unchanged Rachael Ray.
In rookie action, Tamron Hall tied Kelly Clarkson, although both were mostly or completely in repeats, very heavily preempted and both touched a new season low 0.8. Mel Robbins tumbled 25% to a 0.3, matching its season low.
The highest rated program in daytime was Judge Judy, which gave back 7% to a still impressive 5.4 with reruns on all five days, and remained syndication’s No. 1 show in the most current season-to-date household ratings.
The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:
- Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.9, +13% from the week before)
- Dr. Phil (0.6, -14%), tied with Maury (0.6, unchanged)
- Ellen DeGeneres (0.5, unchanged)
In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA means not applicable.
