‘Paternity Court’ Renewed With 80% Coverage

The syndicated show hosted by judge Lauren Lake has been cleared on stations covering 80% of U.S. television homes.

MGM’s Orion TV Productions has renewed rookie syndicated court show Paternity Court with judge Lauren Lake for a second season, with stations on board reaching 80% of U.S. TV households, including on CBS Television Stations’ WLNY New York.

On the half-hour show, Lake presides over a single case, at the end revealing DNA paternity test results.

“We have a great judge in Lauren Lake,” says John Bryan, president of domestic television distribution at MGM Television. “I think her name got people to tune in. Now, she is a superstar. People really engage with her.”

So far this season, Paternity Court is averaging a 0.6 rating among women 25-54, up 20% since its premiere, based on Nielsen ratings through the week of Dec. 30, 2013.

First, Trifecta renews “OK TV” with nonexistent ratings and now this? Is this what it takes now to get renewed in first-run syndication?

Unfortunately there are Independent stations and even Network affiliated stations out there that renew shows that barely get a rating point just to have content. Some shows don’t even cost the stations any money to run as they are on an all-barter basis, basically sharing ad revenue with the producer of the show. Sometimes this is a building block step until the station can afford to take on shows that have higher ratings and returns. But still this kind of fare is just a bad option for viewers.

I agree – I remember a time when those type of ratings would get a show canceled in 13 weeks.
