Telemundo Arizona Adds Weekend Newscast

KTAZ Phoenix is expanding its news offering by adding two hours of weekend news starting this weekend. The station is hiring a dozen staffers to support the addition.

KTAZ Phoenix, the Telemundo station in the country’s 12th largest market, is adding newcasts at 4:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sundays, starting this weekend. Each newscast will be a half-hour long.

The station said in a release that it will hire 12 newsroom staffers to cover breaking news and file live reports from locations. Daniel Aguirre, an experienced journalist with over 10 years in the news business, will anchor the weekend newscasts.

The station is also debuting a new set including high-definition monitors that create a modern look and special lighting elements. It also has invested in new technology, including cellular backpack units that will enable the station to provide live reporting during the week and on weekends from breaking news scenes across the state and extending to the U.S./Mexico border.

“The investment in local news, resources, personnel and cutting-edge technology demonstrates our commitment to inform and serve the local Spanish-speaking community, which has been traditionally underserved with local news,” Araceli De León, President and Regional General Manager, Telemundo Southwest, said in a statement.
