Univision, U of Miami Create Infographics Unit

Journalism students from the University of Miami will produce infographics for Univision News and will be considered for jobs there upon completion of the program.

Univision Communications today entered into a partnership with the University of Miami’s School of Communication to create a student-managed infographics unit for Univision News.

Univision says the partnership expands its commitment “to help develop future leaders in the field of journalism by providing professional opportunities to talented students.”

As a result of this new alliance, journalism students from the University of Miami will produce infographics for Univision News under the leadership and guidance of Professor Alberto Cairo, an expert in information graphics. Initially focused on the 2014 midterm elections, the student-managed Infographics Unit will provide visual data and information to Univision News’ digital platforms — UnivisionNoticias.com and its mobile app — as well as to Univision’s new political blog, Pol16.

“We are excited to collaborate with Professor Alberto Cairo, his students and the University of Miami’s School of Communication through this truly unique partnership opportunity centered on one of the most important and widely used digital journalism tools today,” said Isaac Lee, Univision’s president of news and CEO of Fusion. “Professor Cairo’s unrivaled expertise in the field of infographics will give our digital audiences exclusive access to cutting-edge visual data that will help them better understand electoral facts and tendencies.”

Additionally, as part of its ongoing fellowship programs, Univision News offers graduate students the opportunity to work at Newsport, its state-of-the-art news facility in Miami, or at select Univision television stations. Fellows are assigned to one of Univision News’ units — Broadcast News, Digital Projects, Documentary and Investigative.

At the completion of the program, the fellows may be considered for a regular position at Univision News. Fellowship programs have been established with Columbia University, Florida International University, Stanford University, the University of California at Berkeley, the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, the School of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Miami and the Berklee College of Music.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

“Univision News’ fellowship program is constantly growing and adding more journalism schools, which makes us extremely proud,” added Lee. “This is a win-win situation for everyone involved, as it gives new journalists the opportunity to gather professional experience in a state-of-the-art, award-winning bilingual news organization while it provides Univision News with highly trained and forward-looking talent. Many of our former fellows have already joined our team on a full-time basis and are contributing their fresh outlook and ideas to further our mission of informing and empowering the Hispanic community.”
