The primetime Emmys, bestowed for 66 years, are meant to celebrate excellence in television. But in Emmy’s eyes, excellence too often takes the form of stamina, not the burst of inspiration that may have launched a series and its characters many seasons earlier and since settled into routine. Too often, Emmy celebrates not excellence, but an excellently maintained status quo.

Orange Is The New Black was the big winner Thursday night at the fourth annual Critics’ Choice Television Awards. The Netflix original won Best Comedy Series along with Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and Best Guest Performance in a Comedy. Breaking Bad won as Best Drama Series, while Fargo took home three awards.

RTDNA’s 2014 Paul White Award, which recognizes a lifetime of achievement and service to the profession of electronic journalism goes to Dick Ebersol, former longtime chairman of NBC Sports. “For more than four decades, Dick Ebersol has represented the best of broadcasting,” said Mike Cavender, executive director of RTDNA. “His mark on television is as memorable as it is indelible.”

This year, RTDNA awarded 661 regional Edward R. Murrow Awards in 14 categories, including Overall Excellence, Breaking News, Investigative Reporting and Website. The awards recognize the best electronic journalism and the winners advance to the national competition.

Judges selected 85 honorees from nearly 1,800 submissions.
