Fox News Channel experienced a chaotic second quarter of 2023, one which featured the landmark $787.5 million settlement with Dominion Voting Systems and the ouster of primetime star Tucker Carlson in April. Amid the chaos, Fox News not only marked its 86th consecutive quarter as the top-rated cable news network in total viewers, and No. 1 in total viewers and among Adults 25-54 for nine straight quarters. It also continued to average more total day viewers than any other basic cable network.
Dominion Voting Systems’ defamation lawsuit against Fox News laid bare how the network communicated behind the scenes about broadcasting 2020 election misinformation, ultimately leading the network to fork over a massive settlement. Newsmax could be next, as voting technology company Smartmatic has subpoenaed several of the right-wing cable network’s current and former employees for work and personal correspondence.

David Bohrman, a longtime producer and news executive who was responsible for innovations in live and special events and breaking news, including at CNN and other networks, died on Sunday. He was 69. “He was the creator of more news programming than almost any other producer working in television news today,” CNN’s leadership team wrote in a memo to employees on Sunday evening.
Speculation is growing that Warner Bros. Discovery will sell CNN in the coming year — and the struggling cable network’s former CEO Jeff Zucker has emerged as a possible suitor, sources tell the New York Post. They say Zucker sees a big opportunity at CNN ahead of the 2024 presidential election after ex-CEO Chris Licht’s strategy to revamp the network’s programming to appeal to a more centrist audience flopped, sending ratings and ad revenue tumbling.
With CNN head Chris Licht ousted, other Warner Bros. Discovery executives turn their attention to his very hands-on overlord, with one source wondering: “Who wants to have to manage him?”

Fox News is on the verge of settling another major lawsuit. Abby Grossberg, the former network producer who filed an explosive complaint against the company earlier this year, is in the final stages of ironing out a settlement with the company, according to people familiar with the matter.
Chris Licht is gone, but what remains is the network’s tricky shift to digital and away from a decaying TV business.
For the month of May, NewsNation was up triple digits in both total primetime viewership and in the key advertising demographic of viewers aged 25-54 — with 102% year-over-year growth in the former and 100% growth in the latter.
Do You Believe in Miracles? Sean Hannity And Gavin Newsom Teamed Up To Give The Best Hour Of Cable News In Ages
Travel across the partisan spectrum, and nearly every talking head will tell you in great detail that the country is splintered by fierce partisan loyalties and competing sets of “facts” while blaming their political foes for the current state of enmity. Which is why something of a miracle happened last week, during the 9 p.m. hour of Fox News of all places.
CNN Needs A New Leader. Will Anyone Want The Job?
Even beyond fired CEO Chris Licht’s programming blunders, the cable-news giant is facing industry-wide challenges and corporate hurdles that could make it a hard role to fill.
The judge who will oversee Donald Trump’s arraignment on Tuesday says that cameras are a no-no in the courtroom and the courthouse. In fact, reporters won’t even be allowed to use their cellphones and other electronic equipment inside the courthouse, per an order from the chief district judge of the Florida federal court. Meanwhile, Magistrate Judge Jonathan Goodman, who will preside over the arraignment, has rejected a media coalition request for limited camera access before the proceedings, as well as to make audio available afterward. There will be an overflow room with a video feed, but reporters will have to run outside the courthouse to provide any updates on what is happening inside.
Fox News said Monday was Newsom’s first interview on the network since 2010, back when Newsom was the mayor of San Francisco. Since then, Newsom has often joined the chorus of criticism against the conservative news outlet from Democrats who object to its coverage of guns and how some of the network’s hosts have embraced former President Donald Trump.
Fox News has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Tucker Carlson as he ramps up a competing series on Twitter that drew a combined 169 million views for its first two episodes. Fox is continuing to pay Carlson, and maintains that his contract keeps his content exclusive to Fox through Dec. 31, 2024. Carlson is making a First Amendment argument for posting on Twitter, and asserts that Fox has committed material breaches of his contract.
Jeffrey M. McCall: “Licht’s failure is bad not only for CNN, which is now likely to remain saddled with historically bad ratings, but for the journalism industry as a whole. He was run out of town by the various forces that no longer see a value in information-based, serious, nonpartisan journalism, including the social media mobs who decried Licht’s strategy to reach a wider range of viewers than just the left-of-center audience CNN had catered to for years. Joining the war on Licht were CNN employees themselves, who savaged their boss in a recent magazine report.”
With the appointment of three executives — Amy Entelis (pictured), Virginia Moseley and Eric Sherling — to lead CNN in the wake of the departure of boss Chris Licht, every major cable and broadcast news network is now run, at least in part, by women. California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) will sit with Fox News host Sean Hannity for an interview that will air next week, the network said Thursday. The interview, which will mark the Democrat’s first on the conservative cable news channel in more than a decade, will take place at the governor’s mansion in Sacramento on June 12, and “encompass topics such as immigration, current issues in California, the economy, the 2024 presidential election,” Fox News said.
The CNN Chief Messed Up In Many Ways. Only One Was Fatal
It’s possible – likely, even – that Chris Licht would have survived all of this if it weren’t for the one thing that really mattered: the numbers.
The network will be managed on an interim basis by a group of executives.
Can CNN Be Saved?
In the ousted Chris Licht, CNN had a leader who was not introspective enough to understand why he was failing. He leaves behind an organization in worse shape than when he arrived.
Fox News Wednesday notified Tucker Carlson’s lawyers that the former prime-time anchor violated his contract with the network when he launched his own Twitter show on Tuesday, according to a copy of a letter obtained by Axios. A breach of contract claim sets Fox News up to explore potential legal action against Carlson, a move that would intensify the already thorny public battle between the two parties. Carlson’s lawyers told Axios that any legal action by Fox would violate his First Amendment rights.
The change was announced at CNN’s editorial meeting Wednesday morning and came just two days after Licht said he would “fight like hell” to earn the trust of those around him. David Zaslav, CEO of CNN parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, appointed a four-person interim leadership team, and said at the editorial meeting that he would conduct a thorough search for Licht’s replacement.
