CNN has acquired the tech and talent behind Beme, a social sharing app that looked to a “more authentic” form of news sharing among millennials, the company said Monday. The app, which was bought for an undisclosed sum, will shut down with the acquisition and its 12 employees will join CNN. Beme’s ideas will get free rein as a standalone venture modeled after CNN’s Great Big Story.

President-elect Donald J. Trump, now the nation’s press critic in chief, inviting the leading anchors and executives of television news to join him on Monday for a private meeting of minds. On-air stars like Lester Holt, Charlie Rose, George Stephanopoulos and Wolf Blitzer headed to Trump Tower for the off-the-record gathering, typically the kind of event where journalists and politicians clear the air after a hard-fought campaign. Instead, the president-elect delivered a defiant message: You got it all wrong.
Kellyanne Conway, the campaign manager of Donald Trump’s winning presidential run, says that the off-the-record meeting today between the president-elect and top brass from ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, CNN and Fox News was “excellent” as well as “very candid and honest.”
The off-the-record meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET today and will include top executives and anchors from the nation’s five biggest television networks — ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN and Fox News. Several news outlets have rebutted a report from Fox News stating that an “indictment” is “likely” in an ongoing FBI inquiry into the Clinton Foundation. Throughout the day on Thursday, NBC News, ABC News and CNN all reported that Fox’s assertion was not true. And Bret Baier, the Fox host responsible for the original assertion, seemed to backtrack from it, saying he had spoken “inartfully.”

Jake Tapper of CNN was a moderator of a March 13 Democratic town hall event in which Hillary Clinton appears to have gotten an unfair advantage. As disclosed earlier this week in a WikiLeaks trove of emails relating to Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta, the Clinton campaign received word from then-CNN contributor Donna Brazile that a death-penalty question was on tap for the event. “To find out that someone was unethically helping the Clinton campaign — tipping them off — is just very, very upsetting,” Tapper said.
Between Wednesday’s release of a new mobile app and last week’s poaching of BuzzFeed’s top political news talent, CNN seems to be “future-proofing” itself. The legacy media organization announced a $20 million investment in March, and has since hired 162 members to the digital team. CNN expects to bring that number to 274 by the first quarter of 2017.

Anderson Cooper — who has just signed a new long-term deal with CNN — and ABC’s Martha Raddatz are moderating Sunday’s town-hall debate together, and, sources say, the rival network anchors are at odds over who gets to grill the candidates on the most blistering topics.
Cooper signed a long-term deal to stay with CNN, a person with knowledge of the situation said Tuesday. Cooper’s decision may put an end to the possibility he’ll join Kelly Ripa as co-host of ABC’s syndicated talk show Live.

Following 15 months of testing, CNN today announced it is launching CNN Aerial Imagery and Reporting, or CNN AIR for short. The CNN AIR team will be made up of several drones, or unmanned aerial systems (UAS), along with two full-time UAS operators. The drones will be used for all CNN platforms as well as other Turner Broadcasting and Time Warner entities.
