Now that Rupert Murdoch’s sons James and Lachlan are taking charge of 21st Century Fox, one of their greatest challenges will be Fox News. Or, more, specifically: Roger Ailes. On Tuesday, moments after announcing the succession plan, 21st Century Fox publicly contradicted Ailes’ claim that he would continue to report to the elder Murdoch even after the sons take over. And his contract is coming due soon. So with the sons in charge, will Ailes stay?
Fox News Channel will host a candidate forum for Republican candidates who do not qualify for the network’s GOP debate on Aug. 6. “As we noted when we first announced the debate criteria, our intention has always been to provide coverage to the wide field of Republican candidates and we are glad to present these details today,” said FNC executive vice president of news editorial Michael Clemente. The forum, in Cleveland, will be moderated by Bill Hemmer and Martha MacCallum. It will be carried live on Fox News from 1 to 3 p.m. ET.
Fox News Channel plans to restrict the first scheduled GOP debate to the top 10 candidates, based on polling averages from the five most recent national public opinion surveys. But the field could approach 20 candidates. In a letter to the heads of Fox News and the Republican National Committee, a group of New Hampshire Republicans suggested that Fox split the debate into two panels with FNC broadcasting the two panels back-to-back or on consecutive nights.
