A not-so-simple question has plagued the TV and advertising industries for years: What is the value of TV programming that is no longer being watched on TV? A partial answer has arrived. Nielsen said Tuesday it is now counting views of certain types of programming on Hulu’s live service and YouTube TV, which can then be used as currency in negotiations between TV networks and advertisers. The maneuver would place viewing from so-called “skinny bundles” of programming offered by subscription-video-on-demand players into the mix when Madison Avenue decides what types of content to support.

Fox Offers Live Feed On Hulu Without Affils

The Wall Street Journal reports that Fox is turning up the heat in a fight with its affiliates over carriage fees from OTT services that want to carry Fox programming. The network has started offering a national, 24-hour feed on Hulu’s live-streaming TV service in more than 70 markets where it hasn’t come to agreements on streaming with local affiliates. The national service replaces the affiliates’ local news and syndicated programming with programming from Fox cable networks.

Hulu Live Launches With 50 Chs. For $40

Hulu has officially unleashed its horse in the crowded virtual pay-TV race. The streaming-video provider announced the beta launch of Hulu With Live TV, priced starting at $39.99 monthly for around 50 channels. The service includes ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC programming — with the availability of local stations varying by market — and cable nets including ESPN, CNN, Fox News, TBS, TNT and Disney Channel. Showtime is available for $9 extra.
