When it comes to ABC’s forthcoming Roseanne revival, eight is apparently not enough. The network — which initially commissioned eight new episodes of the classic family comedy — has ordered one additional episode, bringing the total to 9. Five episodes have already been shot and, according to sources, ABC execs are very pleased with what they are seeing.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is betting on acclaimed director and producer Steven Spielberg for its first major foray into creating original video content. The deal with the Jaws and Jurassic Park director’s Amblin Television, along with Comcast-owned NBCUniversal’s TV production arm, is to develop new episodes of Amazing Stories, which originally aired between 1985 and 1987 on NBC.
It’s easy to gripe that writers should be spending more time generating original ideas, but it’s a lot harder to successfully pitch, say, a new series about a high school chemistry teacher who morphs into a terrorizing drug dealer (the once-in-a-lifetime Breaking Bad) than a tried-and-true formula that serves up nostalgia.

As producer FremantleMedia preps the upcoming 16th season of the revived American Idol on ABC, it has quietly begun to draw a number of Idol veterans once again into the show’s orbit. I’m sure there are people who are excited that David Lynch and Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks is getting an 18-episode reboot that begins at 9 p.m. Sunday on Showtime; that the original casts of ABC’s Roseanne and NBC’s Will & Grace will be reuniting on their former networks; that the CW is resuscitating Dynasty and CBS S.W.A.T. (with new casts), or even that American Idol, whose farewell season on Fox feels as though it ended about five minutes ago, will be back next year on ABC for a 16th run. I’m just not one of them.”
NBC today released the first official trailer for its upcoming revival of the classic Must-See-TV sitcom, with Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally in the roles they originated almost 20 years ago.
Producers with pilots in contention at ABC were less than thrilled to hear the news that the network was reviving American Idol. The talent competition, which ABC announced Tuesday will return to television in the 2017-18 season, will likely fill up multiple time slots that might otherwise gone to scripted series. All of this adds up to ABC probably being more selective about its comedy and drama pickups this year.
