While not named as defendants, Les Moonves and CAA have been dragged into the ring in a legal dust-up over the Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather battle of last spring. Actor Gabriel Rueda has sued CBS, Showtime, Pacquiao and his trainer/coach Freddie Roach in a multi-claim breach of contract complaint filed in L.A. Superior Court on Wednesday. Rueda, who also goes by Gabriel Salvador, says he is owed more $8.6 million for making introductions for the CBS boss that lead to the record-breaking May 2, 2015, Fight Of the Century.
Veteran Showtime executive Tom Christie has been elevated to chief operating officer. Christie, who has been with the network for more than 25 years, had most recently been president, distribution, business development and network operations, a position that was created for him in 2012.
Showtime Is Targeting ‘Cord Cobblers’
That’s how Showtime’s president-CEO, David Nevins, referred to his subscribers while discussing the evolution of his premium cable network at the winter press tour. “Today’s audiences are cord cobblers, individuals and households who creatively manage their content consumption with an assortment of subscriptions that work uniquely for their needs.” Because of the availability of its stand-alone streaming service on iTunes, Roku and Android devices, and as add-on subscriptions for Hulu, Amazon Prime and PlayStation Vue, Showtime has “availability and visibility wherever those cord cobblers reside,” he said.

One discovery: many subscribers are opting to stream the network’s live feed, instead of seeking out on-demand programming. “The livestreaming has done better than we expected,” said President David Nevins of the feature, something which HBO Now doesn’t offer. “As people are discovering Showtime, a lot of them just want to see what’s on the livestreaming, so they’re watching it there.”
The OTT era has begun at Showtime. The premium cable network launched its new stand-alone streaming service Tuesday. The service, which is also called Showtime, is available for $10.99 per month via Apple, Roku, PlayStation Vue and Showtime.com. Hulu subscribers can add Showtime at a discounted rate, for $8.99 per month, on top of Hulu’s $7.99 monthly fee.
David Nevins is on the rise at Showtime. The president of the pay cable network will add the CEO title to his business card at the end of the year, when longtime chairman and CEO Matthew Blank passes along the title in a transition plan revealed today.
The cable channel said Wednesday that it will begin streaming on July 12 for $10.99 a month on all Apple devices, including the iPad, iPhone and Apple TV. CBS Corp., which owns Showtime, said it will be available on non-Apple devices soon.
HBO and Showtime are banding together for the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao bout, which is expected to set a record for revenue.
