Turner To Rebrand TBS, Remake TNT
At the Turner upfront Wednesday morning, Kevin Reilly rolled out a very ambitious plan, including a rebrand of TBS, a makeover for TNT, a goal to double production of original content over the next three years, and a new ad program called the Turner Data Cloud. It’s all a part of a push by Turner, and cable TV generally over the past few years, to compete more closely with broadcast for both ratings and ad dollars.
The Kentucky men’s college basketball team nearly lost a game for the first time this season on Saturday night, which made TBS a big winner. The Wildcats’ final-seconds win over Notre Dame to secure a spot in the Final Four became the highest-rated college basketball game in history on cable and the most-watched program ever on TBS, according to Nielsen. The contest averaged an 8.4 household rating on TBS, peaking with an 11.1 from 10:45 p.m. to 11 p.m.

2014 and 2015 NCAA men’s basketball tournament games will air on TBS as yet another major sporting event jumps from broadcast. Three years ago Turner began broadcasting the first five rounds of the tournament along with CBS, but the marquee Final Four contests had remained on broadcast. Under the new arrangement, which covers 2014 and 2015, CBS will retain custody of the NCAA men’s basketball final. In 2016, TBS will televise both the Final Four and the national championship, then the three games will switch to CBS in 2017.
