The 9 p.m. episode of Marlon drew a 1.2 rating in adults 18-49 and 5.1 million viewers, up from a 1.1 and 4.6 million viewers in the same time slot last week for a 9% increase in the demo and 11% in total viewers. The 9:30 episode drew a 1.0 and 3.8 million viewers, making it approximately even with the 9:30 episode last week (1.0, 3.7 million)

Miramax Lays Off 20 Staffers In Restructuring

Miramax, the onetime indie film powerhouse founded by the Weinstein brothers, has laid off 20 employees in a second round of downsizing this year under a new chief executive. ‘Bachelor in Paradise’ Rises On Tuesday

Tuesday’s installment of ABC’s Bachelor in Paradise was up in both key ratings measures, with the episode featuring an interview with Corinne Olympios. According to Nielsen, Bachelor in Paradise averaged a 1.3 rating in adults 18-49 and 4.3 million total viewers, up approximately 13% in both measures from the previous Tuesday episode. Olympios was supposed to be a contestant on this season of the reality dating series, but dropped out after an incident with fellow contestant DeMario Jackson.

Viewership Down For Video Music Awards

The MTV Video Music Awards tallied 5.68 million viewers across 10 different networks on Sunday for a show dominated by Kendrick Lamar’s coronation and the debut of Taylor Swift’s new video. That’s down from the 6.5 million people who watched the VMAs in 2016, and the 9.8 million who watched the year before. Among the broadcast networks, NBC won the week in primetime, averaging 5.5 million viewers. CBS had 4.2 million, ABC had 3.1 million, Fox had 2.4 million, Telemundo had 1.5 million, Univision had 1.4 million, Ion Television had 1.3 million and the CW had 890,000.

This fall’s freshman slate from the Big Five resonates with a clear message: Creatively, the broadcast networks are fed up trying to compete for new-and-different with their cable and streaming rivals, and have thrown in the towel. Surprise is off the table for the broadcast nets, which have succumbed to formulas and spinoffs. Comfort TV is the rule.

‘Bachelor’ Beats ‘Ninja’ For Season High

ABC’s Bachelor in Paradise saw a big enough jump in the Monday Nielsen overnight ratings to put it a nose beyond NBC’s American Ninja Warrior in the key demo. With both shows airing from 8-10 p.m., Bachelor in Paradise averaged a 1.7 rating in adults 18-49 and 5.6 million viewers. American Ninja Warrior drew a 1.5 rating and 6.4 million viewers. Bachelor was up by approximately 30% in the key demo and total viewers compared to last week, hitting a new high in both measures for the show’s fourth season.

CBS To Wrap ‘Candy Crush’ Early

The network will close out the game show Candy Crush with a two-hour finale this Saturday, Sept. 2. The show has been airing on Sundays at 9 p.m., and had been expected to run through Sept. 10. The live-action game show, hosted by Mario Lopez, is based on the mobile game Candy Crush Saga.
