Michigan Capitol Correspondent

Gray Television is seeking a Michigan Capitol Correspondent to cover local, state and national political issues affecting Michigan residents.

This position will work for at least three Gray Television stations covering the state of Michigan: WILX (Lansing-Jackson), WNEM (Saginaw-Flint), and WLUC (Marquette-Upper Peninsula).

This position may also appear on Gray stations across the country when covering statewide issues or national political races.

The Gray Michigan Capitol Reporter is a Lansing-based position who will work with a photographer/editor to cover the state legislative session, elections, and statewide issues and help grow our presence at the Michigan Capitol.

You would be responsible for daily and live coverage for three Gray television stations across Michigan.

The successful candidate will be responsible for (but not limited to) the following:

  • Coordinate with stations across the state for live shots and coverage of key statewide events and issues. Participate in story selection and play an active role in editorial process.
  • Develop and maintain sources and experts at all levels of government.
  • Organized and well-versed in keeping track of legislation and be able to summarize and explain it to viewers in an understandable and conversational manner.
  • Research, shoot, write and edit news content for on-air, digital, social, and streaming platforms. Must have strong writing, storytelling, and reporting skills.
  • Produce and anchor weekly digital political show.
  • Supervise and assign work for at least one other State Capitol bureau employee and interns.
  • Understand Freedom of Information and Open Meetings laws to file regular requests. Must have excellent news judgment and journalism ethics.
  • Ability to travel throughout the state, especially during election cycles, to cover candidates running for state and federal offices.
  • While primarily a dayside Monday-Friday position, must be able to work longer hours, different shifts, and/or days based on legislative session and events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Degree in journalism, communications or related field.
  • Prior reporting experience.
  • Have and maintain clean driving record.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Lifestyle Show Executive Producer/Host

Studio 10 is a lifestyle show currently airing 4-5pm weekdays on WILX-TV 10, in Lansing, Michigan.

The show celebrates the people, places and events that make mid-Michigan a great place to live!

It is a combination of sales/sponsored content and interviews, as well as original reporting from throughout our area.

The show airs live and includes live studio guests, pre-produced packages, and field-anchoring.

Studio 10 launched in Oct 2020, has been very successful, and is now looking for a EP/Host to take it to the next level.

Your responsibilities will include (but not be limited to) the following:

  • The Studio 10 Executive Producer/Host manages this 4pm hour-long lifestyle show on WILX-TV 10 in Lansing MI.
  • Oversee entire TV show, website and social media. Responsible for decisions that affect the show in general, as well as day-to-day management.
  • Establish and fulfill the show’s vision, goals and objectives.
  • Supervise Studio 10 staff, including establishing job descriptions, setting goals and expectations, and reviewing. Staff includes a producer, a co-host/reporter, a reporter (who also serve as hosts at times), and a videographer.
  • Work with Sales Department on all sponsored elements of the show.
  • Manage and coordinate all orientation and training for show staff.
  • Maintain editorial control of all content appearing on Studio 10.
  • Responsible for the accuracy of all elements of the show including on air scripts, graphics web stories, etc. to maintain the show’s brand and image.
  • Develop an editorial decision-making process, including a weekly editorial meeting with all stakeholders.
  • Develop a reporting procedure with News Director and/or General Manager to keep him/her apprised of daily content, in order to collaborate if opportunities arise.
  • Continually brainstorm with staff on story ideas, showcasing and presentation.
  • Establish procedures for all elements of the show including booking of guests, production, calendars, etc.
  • Motivate staff and encourage “buy in” and teamwork.
  • Provide staff feedback and evaluation on a regular basis.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a host or on-air personality
  • Ability to prioritize and address multiple projects with varying production timelines
  • Must be energetic, positive, and great in a team environment
  • Must be a highly motivated self-starter, able to work well alone and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to lead and work well with others.
  • Strong editorial skills and ability to think creatively under constant deadline pressure.
  • Must have the ability to stay up to date on current events; what’s popular, trendy, etc.

Digital Executive Producer

We are looking for a Digital Executive Producer to work on the WILX website and social media platforms.

The ideal candidate will oversee digital efforts and create content on all digital platforms.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Creating, managing and editing text, video and slideshow content for all of WILX TV’s digital platforms, including but not limited to websites, apps and social media platforms.
  • Aggressively pursuing news tips and reporting on breaking news on digital formats, driving viewers across multiple platforms.
  • Collaborating with the entire newsroom on developing stories and best practices for digital publishing.
  • Research, propose, and develop new and innovative emerging technology strategies to expand upon and deliver the WILX brand experience.
  • Analytics reporting when needed.
  • Collaborate with Creative Services team members to create effective content and to communicate brand.
  • Must have regular and timely attendance and flexibility for changing operational needs.
  • Other duties as assigned by the News Director.

Qualification/Requirements:

  • Candidates should be able to work quickly to meet deadlines in a very demanding news environment, must be able to multitask, must be a self-starter and must be able to work a flexible schedule.
  • Applicants must be proficient in grammar, punctuation, and spelling
  • Candidate must have excellent writing and communication skills.

Technical Requirements:

  • Knowledge of graphic, motion, and multimedia software, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, DreamWeaver, and Flash. Knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Knowledge and understanding of HTML5, and the capabilities of web browsers.
