WKBT, an award-winning television and news organization in La Crosse, Wisconsin covering counties in three states has openings for a Morning Anchor, a News Anchor and an Assistant News Director.

Experienced Journalist

WKBT is looking for an EXPERIENCED JOURNALIST with a proven track record of leadership and community involvement to anchor the coulee region’s fastest growing morning newscast.

Our dream candidate is an energetic morning person who can deliver everything from hard news to features with clarity and context, thrives when working with a team, and shows strong editorial judgment.

We are a newsroom that values creativity, hard work, and enterprise storytelling.

We need an anchor who will be involved in the day-to-day operations of the newsroom, be a mentor to staff members, and regularly produce content for all our newscasts.

What you’ll do:

  • –        Present news stories and other content for all platforms that is clear, engaging and meaningful
  • –        Develop sources and stories within the community
  • –        Engage with viewers in the community and over social media
  • –        Assist in writing, copy editing, researching, and coordinating news stories
  • –        Work with producers and reporters to grow their skills
  • –        Regularly create original content, develop story ideas and sources, and help generate compelling and understandable newscasts
  • –        Report from the field as assigned
  • –        Participate in promotional activities including public appearances

What you’ll bring:

  • –        At least 1 to 3 years of anchoring and reporting experience
  • –        Bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism or related field
  • –        Smooth and effective delivery of content for live broadcast
  • –        Strong, demonstrated news judgment
  • –        Excellent writing and copy-editing skills
  • –        Proficiency in story creation and newscast production
  • –        Understanding of digital/new media platforms and strategy
  • –        Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • –        Eye for shaping solutions
  • –        Familiarity with iNews, AVID video editing software preferred, but not required

Experienced Reporter

We are also looking for an EXPERIENCED REPORTER who’s looking to make the next step in their career. You are a strong, engaged, and animated communicator who wants to cover the stories that matter to the Coulee Region through strong storytelling and from the anchor desk.

Here’s what our ideal candidate needs to know:

–        This is the type of market where you can easily become a star by just doing what you do: being an excellent storyteller who’s great at live shots and dedicated to digital.
–        You will anchor the noon show on weekdays but may be tapped to anchor other shows as needed.
–       We provide regular, constructive feedback from an experienced team and an outside storytelling coach.
–       You’ll need a passion to look beyond an event or press release to provide context to the stories you’re assigned.
–       Depending on your strengths, you may work as a morning or dayside MMJ.
–       We love innovation when it comes to workflow, content, and training, and we want to hear your ideas.


–       2-4 years of reporting experience/live reporting, preferred.
–       Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or related field.
–       Strong verbal and written communication skills including excellent news writing and visual storytelling.
–       Familiarity with digital video cameras, non-linear editing, and social media platforms.
–       Proficient at posting content to various websites and social media platforms.
–       Willingness to work evenings, weekends and holidays if needed.
–       Ability to lift 30 lbs. of gear and to sit, walk or stand for long periods of time.
–       Valid Driver’s License and good driving record.

Assistant News Director

News 8 Now has an immediate opening for a dynamic Assistant News Director to become our next newsroom leader.

Not only will you help manage the day-to-day operations of the newsroom, but you’ll also shepherd Morgan Murphy Media’s new J365 Producer program.

The Assistant News Director will work closely with the News Director on special projects, planning, and leading a growing team of award-winning journalists.

They will also guide the next generation of Producers through an intensive year-long on-the-job training program designed to set them up for a long and successful career through a dedicated curriculum to include showcasing, newsroom leadership, understanding the audience, goal setting, digital producing and more.

What you’ll do:

  • Work closely with broadcast and digital producers, MMJs, photojournalists, and anchors to create compelling news content for all News 8 Now newscasts and platforms
  • Guide daily editorial meetings
  • Develop daily coverage plans and special content plans
  • Oversee J365 Producer program
  • Administrative duties like scheduling and training
  • Provide feedback to the news team
  • Produce newscasts as needed

What you’ll bring:

  • Newsroom management experience preferred
  • A strong newswriting and newscast producing background
  • Excellent communication and people skills
  • Detail-oriented, with strong organizational skills
  • Ability to multi-task in high stress situations
  • Must be able to work flexible hours and adapt to schedule changes
