Grammys, Kobe Power Entertainment Mags
Magazines were the standout performers in an otherwise tepid session ending Feb. 2 as five days of impeachment hearings blacked out numerous shows in many markets.
That said, four of the top five magazines generated significant ratings steam fueled by extensive coverage of the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards and reports on the life and tragic death of NBA legend Kobe Bryant.
Entertainment Tonight was the No. 1 news mag for the fourth week in a row, growing 4% from the prior frame to a 2.9 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating. Sister show Inside Edition recovered 8% to a 2.7.
Access Hollywood scored the largest percentage increase of any magazine, surging 17% to a 1.4 in households, and leaping 40% in the coveted women 25-54 demo.
Although TMZ was unchanged at a 1.1, Extra — now fronted by the energetic Billy Bush — shot up 11% to a 1.0 and matched its highest rating of the season.
In daytime, Dr. Phil shrugged off a host of preemptions and jumped back into its usual spot at the head of the talk show class with a 5% advance to a 2.1.
Live with Kelly and Ryan snared second place despite a 5% dip to a 2.0, while Ellen DeGeneres declined 19% to a 1.7.
Judge Judy overcame a number of preemptions and bounded ahead 4% to a 5.9, taking honors as the supreme court show for the 1,219th consecutive week.
Among the rookie gavelers, the just-renewed Judge Jerry was the top courtroom newcomer for the 21st week in a row, holding its ground at a 0.9 even though it was in reruns on all five days.
The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:
- Dr. Phil (0.9, unchanged from the week before)
- Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.8, -11%)
- Ellen DeGeneres (0.7, -22%)
- Maury (0.6 unchanged), tied with Wendy Williams (0.6, unchanged)
- Steve Wilkos (0.5, unchanged)
In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA means not applicable.
