New-Season Premiers Send Syndies Soaring
Magazines ignited in the session ending Sept. 16 despite widespread power outages in some markets and preemptions due to Hurricane Florence and the 9/11 anniversary.
Inside Edition added 11% from the week before to a 3.1 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, and edged showbiz news leader Entertainment Tonight, which rose 7% to a 14-week high 2.9.
TMZ picked up 8% to a 1.3, Access jumped 9% to a 15-week high 1.2, Extra surged 10% to a 12-week high 1.1 and Daily Mail TV spiked 11% to a seven-week high 1.0.
Meanwhile, Page Six TV saw its overnights mushroom over last year’s time periods by 40% in Los Angeles and 60% in Chicago with next-day coverage of the Emmy Awards on Sept 18.
ET was the highest rated of all the mags in the overnights with its Emmy recap, scoring a 3.0 rating/6 share primary run metered market average and time period growth of 25% in New York and 15% in Los Angeles.
Elsewhere, panel talker Face the Truth, the first new nationally cleared first-run strip to debut this season, opened with a very respectable 0.5 among women 25-54 and a 0.8 household rating. That was the second biggest premiere of the five first-run strips launched since September 2017, and four of the five have already been renewed.

Also of note in the off-net and off-cable true crime arena, Dateline raced ahead 9% to a four-week high 1.2 and quadrupled the debut week of True Crime Files at a 0.3.
At the top of the overall ratings chart, Judge Judy kicked off season 23 with an 11% leap to a 16-week high 6.9 and was the highest-rated syndicated show for a seventh consecutive session.
