WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

Another Cosby-Powered Good Week For Mags

While magazines had a good week post-sweep first week, talkers were not as lucky. But the top three game shows all posted double-digit gains from the week before.

Viewer interest in the widening Bill Cosby scandal again sent the entertainment magazines sharply higher in the week ending Dec. 7.

Leader Entertainment Tonight surged 17% from the week before to a 3.5; Access Hollywood shot up 20% to a 1.8; Extra remained at its season high 1.6 despite being preempted at least 25 times in various markets by college football and the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting, while its weekly Extra Weekend spurted 29%; The Insider rose 18% to a 1.3.

Other magazines getting boosts were Inside Edition, up 11%; TMZ, up 12; and Dish Nation, up 11%.

On the other hand, most daytimers lost ground in what was the first week following the November sweep. For example, only three of the top dozen veteran talkers were up week to week — Steve Harvey, which gained 6% in households to a 1.9 and soared 25% among women 25-54; Dr. Oz, which grew 7% to a 1.5 and also improved 15% from last year, the most of any talk show; and the soon-to-depart Queen Latifah, which leaped 10% to a 1.1.

Dr. Phil was No. 1 in talk for the 14th straight week with a 3.2, followed closely by Live with Kelly & Michael at a 3.1. However, among women 25-54, Kelly & Michael was tops with a 1.6 demo rating.

Among the closely watched newcomers to first run, Hot Bench — which was just renewed for year two — gained 7% to a 1.6 and led the rookies for the 12th consecutive week. Hot Bench was also first in total viewers with 2.111 million, and in the women 25-54 sales demo with a 0.8, tied with The Real.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Next in line were Meredith Vieira and Celebrity Name Game, tied at a 1.2 in households with 1.534 million and 1.736 million viewers, respectively.

The Real, which was up 11% to a 1.0, garnered 1.278 million; while Judge Faith, which gained 17% to a 0.7 and 890,000, followed.

Elsewhere, Judge Judy, with a 7.0, was the top-rated court show for the 950th straight week, a streak that began more than 18 years ago.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Live with Kelly & Michael (1.6, -5% from the week before)
  • Dr. Phil (1.5, -6%), tied with Ellen DeGeneres (1.5, -6%)
  • Maury (1.2, -7%), tied with Wendy Williams (1.2, +9%)
  • Steve Harvey (1.0, +25%)
  • Steve Wilkos (0.9 +12%)

In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA mean not applicable.
