WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

First Sweeps Week Brings Strong Numbers

Magazines do well, as do some talkers (Dr. Phil, Steve Wilkos and Jerry Springer), Judge Judy, Internet video show Right This Minute, games Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire plus many off-net sitcoms.

The first full week of the November sweep was a strong one for syndicated magazines. In fact, ratings for every show in the top five grew in the session ending Nov. 9.

Leader Entertainment Tonight had its best week since March, jumping 6% to a new season high 3.6. Inside Edition was up 10% to a new season high 3.2. TMZ added 6% to a 1.9.

Access Hollywood scored the biggest increase in the category, surging 13% to a 1.8. Extra improved 7% to a 1.5, despite being preempted 30 times by election coverage, news and college football.

And The Insider held steady at its season high 1.3. In addition, Dish Nation climbed 10% to a 1.1.

In daytime, Dr. Phil was the No. 1 talk show for the 10th straight week, hitting a new season high 3.4, up 6% from the prior frame. Phil was also the talk leader among women 25-54, rising 5% to a 1.8 demo rating.

Live with Kelly & Michael remained at its season-high 3.1 in households, and increased 11% from last year.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Ellen DeGeneres was unchanged at a third-place 2.8, while Maury rounded out the top four with a steady 2.0.

Other talkers with strong showings included Steve Wilkos, up 14% for both the week and the year; Wendy Williams, up 14% from last year; Jerry Springer, up 8%, both weekly and annually; and Queen Latifah, which rose 10% from last year.

In addition, Dr. Oz and Rachael Ray both surged 14% in the key women 25-54 demo.

Among the closely watched rookie shows, Hot Bench backed off slightly from its prior week’s record, but was still the highest rated newcomer for the eighth consecutive week with a 1.5 household rating. Bench also finished first in the women 25-54 demo.

Meredith Vieira, so far the only freshman with a firm go for year two, was a solid second in households at a 1.2, tied with Celebrity Name Game, which remained at a 1.2 for the fifth straight week.

The Real was unchanged at a fourth-place  1.0 for the sixth week in a row, while Judge Faith fell 14% to a new season low 0.6.

In terms of total audience, Hot Bench was the biggest draw with 2.111 million viewers on average. Celebrity Name Game reached 1.682 million; Meredith Vieira moved up to 1.551 million; The Real ratcheted up to 1.312 million; while Judge Faith slipped to 850,000.

Many off-net sitcoms had a positive week, with Modern Family leading the week-to-week gains with a 19% climb to a new season high 4.3.

The overall syndication leader was Wheel of Fortune, which grew 4% from the prior week in households to a season-high 7.2.
