Top Talk Shows Among Sweeps Winners

First-run shows posting household ratings gains from November 2013 include Dr. Phil, Live with Kelly & Michael, Wendy Williams, Steve Wilkos, Right This Minute, Paternity Court, Inside Edition, Dish Nation, Jeopardy and Family Feud. Rookie shows that improved upon their premiere week numbers included Hot Bench and Celebrity Name Game.

The national results of the November sweep (Oct. 30-Nov. 26) are out and talk shows had the most growth compared to last November, with four of the top six up significantly.

Dr. Phil easily took the top spot among talkers for the ninth consecutive major sweep with a 3.5, its best November in six years, and up 3% from last year. Phil also finished first among women 25-54.

Live with Kelly & Michael increased 7% to a 3.1 household rating, its biggest November sweep since 2011, to land in a strong second place.

Other top talkers with sharp year-to-year improvement included Steve Harvey, which clocked its best November ever with a 6% jump to a 1.9; Wendy Williams, which rose 14% to a personal November sweep best 1.6; and Steve Wilkos, which surged 7% to match its all-time November series high.

Outside of talk the shows with the biggest increases from last November were: Family Feud, up 19% to a 6.2; Right This Minute, up 55% to a 1.7; and Paternity Court, up 30% to a 1.3.

Hot Bench finished at the head of the first-run freshman class with a 1.7 sweep average, up 31% from its September debut week, and 2.284 million viewers. Bench was also first for the sweep in the women 25-54 sales demo, with a 0.8.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Celebrity Name Game averaged a 1.3 in households and 1.796 million viewers, followed by Meredith Vieira at a 1.2 and 1.562 million; The Real at a 1.0 and 1.335 million; and Judge Faith with a 0.7 and 890,000.

Elsewhere, Judge Judy dominated the court shows by a margin of more than 5 rating points with a 7.2 average, and landed just a tenth of a point behind game show leader Wheel of Fortune’s 7.3, which took first place on the overall syndication ratings chart.

Entertainment Tonight, with a 3.6 average, won the magazine race for the  96th sweep in a row, a winning streak dating back to 1990, and Big Bang Theory posted a 6.1 average, topping the off-net sitcoms for the third straight November.

The sweep’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Ellen DeGeneres (1.7, -11%)
  • Live with Kelly & Michael (1.6, -6%)
  • Maury (1.4, unchanged)
  • Wendy Williams (1.1, unchanged)
  • Steve Wilkos (1.0, +11%)
  • Steve Harvey (0.9, -18%)
  • Jerry Springer (0.8, +14%), tied with Dr. Oz (0.8, -33%) and Rachael Ray (0.8, unchanged)
