Nexstar Taps Johnson As Des Moines GM

The station group chooses Native Iowan Mary Ann Johnson to Lead its ABC-CW duo of WOI and KCWI.

Nexstar Media Group today appointed Mary Ann Johnson vice president and general manager of its WOI-TV (ABC), KCWI (CW) and associated digital services in Des Moines-Ames, Iowa (DMA 68). Johnson assumes her new responsibilities immediately and reports to Diane Kniowski, Nexstar Broadcasting SVP and regional manager.

An Iowa native and broadcast industry veteran. Johnson brings to her new role expertise in local and national sales management, local content creation, new business development and strategic planning across multiple media platforms.

She began her broadcasting career nearly two decades ago as a national sales manager at KPTH in her hometown of Sioux City, Iowa. Her continued success ultimately led to her promotion to KMEG-KPTH general manager, with the dual responsibility of serving as general sales manager of the stations. 

From 2008 to 2013, Johnson was VP-GM of KCAU in Sioux City.

In addition, during her broadcast career, Johnson was a senior account manager at KTVK Phoenix.

She most recently served as a consultant for the largest privately-held U.S. automotive group where she worked directly with 13 auto dealerships and 11 manufacturers to develop revenue-generating marketing strategies and initiatives focused on driving operating efficiencies.

Johnson earned her BS in business administration from Bellevue University in Nebraska.
