Quincy Buys Second Station This Week
For the second time this week, Quincy Media has announced the purchase of a TV station. The latest is ABC affiliate WSIL Paducah, Ky.-Cape Girardeau, Mo. -Harrisburg, Ill. (DMA 88).
WSIL is the only station owned by Mel Wheeler.
On Monday, the Quincy, Ill.-based group said it was buying NBC affiliate KVOA Tucson, Ariz., from Cordillera Communications.
On Monday, Scripps said it had agreed to buy Cordillera’s other 15 full- and low-power stations. KVOA was left out of that deal because of the FCC local ownership limits. Scripps already owns two station in Tucson.
Quincy has not released terms of either the WSIL or KVOA deals, but they will eventually become public when Quincy files for FCC approval.
WSIL will be Quincy’s fourth Illinois station.
BRAND CONNECTIONS
With WSIL, Quincy Media expands to 16 markets. The family-owned company headed by Ralph Oakley began as Quincy Newspapers Inc. in 1926, the result of the merger of the Quincy Herald and the Quincy Whig newspapers.
It entered the broadcast business in Quincy in the 1940s and 1950s. The company changed its name to Quincy Media in 2016.
