More Season Premieres Boost Syndie Interest
Syndication got into high gear in the session ending Sept. 27 with the eagerly anticipated season premieres of Ellen DeGeneres and Kelly Clarkson. In addition, the entertainment magazines were buoyed by blanket next-day coverage of the Primetime Emmy Awards.
In daytime, the beleaguered Ellen unveiled its 18th season with an emotional apology and a ratings rebound of 50% from the prior frame’s all-time low to a 1.2 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen household rating, although that was 29% below the program’s comparable week last year.
Right behind the long-running Ellen was sophomore fan favorite Kelly Clarkson, which surged 25% to an 11-week high 1.0 with its second-season opener despite numerous preemptions for coverage of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s funeral and the Kentucky attorney general’s decision in the Breonna Taylor case.
Topping the talkers was Dr. Phil, which jumped 6% to a 1.9. The highly rated eponymous show from Dr. Phil McGraw has finished first in the genre 197 times in the last 212 weeks.
Not far behind Phil was the popular Live with Kelly and Ryan, which eased 11% to a 1.7 after running into a number of preemptions.
Among other closely watched contenders in the category, Tamron Hall — at a steady 0.8 despite preemptions — held 100% of its big second-season bow, tying Rachael Ray, which retreated 11 to a 0.8 in its second week of the new television year, and Wendy Williams, which rose 14% to a 0.8 with its Season 13 debut.
BRAND CONNECTIONS
Judge Judy was the highest rated show of any type in daytime by a mile, growing 2% to a an 11-week high 5.8. Not surprisingly, Judy was also the No. 1 rated and most watched program in syndication overall.
In access, major entertainment mag moves to the upside after the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards were an 11% leap for Access Hollywood to a 1.0 and a 17% spike to a 0.7 for Extra, which also shot up 33% in the key women 25-54 demo. Entertainment Tonight was an especially bright spot, holding its season high 2.2.
The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:
- Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.8, -11% from the week before)
- Dr. Phil (0.7, unchanged)
- Maury (0.6, +20%)
- Ellen DeGeneres (0.5, +67%)
