Spectrum Networks Launches Local News App To Maine Customers

Spectrum Networks has launched its first digital-only local news platform in a non-Spectrum News linear TV market, bringing Spectrum’s style of local reporting and community-based journalism exclusively to its video and internet customers in Maine via the Spectrum News App.

Spectrum News serves as an accessible, reliable news platform, empowering awareness and connection through objective reporting and storytelling for Mainers. Spectrum customers in Maine can download the app to read, listen to or watch the local news they need — anytime, anywhere.

“Spectrum Networks has a long tradition of covering local news and the stories that matter to communities,” said Sam Singal, vice president editorial and content, Spectrum News. “As a Bangor native and proud Mainer, I know first-hand the integral role community and local connections play in making Maine a great place to live and work. Now, Spectrum customers in my home state can be even more connected and engaged with their neighbors and communities.”

Localized content includes a mix of news, politics, local activities and events, community storytelling and ZIP code-specific weather reports created specifically for Mainers. Consistent with Spectrum Networks’ “boots on the ground” approach, a team of six digital journalists and producers — who live and work in Maine — will report and tell stories within the communities. Journalists will cover areas in and around Portland and Southern Maine, including Lewiston-Auburn, Wells and Bangor, local and state politics from Augusta, and other issues that impact all residents of Maine.

Daniel Dinsmore, who has more than 20 years of media and journalism experience in Maine, most recently as editor and publisher of The Maine Monitor, has been hired as executive producer.

Veteran journalist and producer Maddison Raynor, who most recently worked at News Center Maine in Portland, serves as digital producer.

Digital journalists include Sean Murphy, an award-winning reporter who most recently covered South Portland for The Forecaster, and Susan Cover, a veteran journalist with more than 24 years of experience, including 10 years in the Statehouse Bureau for the Kennebec Journal.

As part of the content created specifically for the app, Spectrum News also will launch The People’s People: Maine, a political podcast that seeks to deepen the connection between Maine’s elected officials and the communities they represent. The podcast will highlight engaging and in-depth interviews with mayors, state leaders and federal lawmakers. Hosted by Spectrum Networks journalist Lindsey Christ, the new weekly podcast will be available for download starting in September.

In addition to Spectrum’s original local reporting, the app features curated news content from the Portland Press Herald, the Bangor Daily News and Maine Magazine to offer a diverse mix of voices that complement Spectrum News’ coverage. Content also will include reporting from Spectrum News’ national team of journalists covering national issues relevant to Mainers.

The Spectrum News App has served as a resource for highly-localized news since its launch July 2020. Each month, hundreds of thousands of customers across Spectrum News’ nine-state footprint visit the app for comprehensive news, weather forecasts and events in their local communities.
