WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

Syndies Left With Some New Years’ Hangovers

With many shows in reruns, ratings took a dip in the session ending Jan. 1.

The session ending on New Year’s Day was a quiet one for all but a few of the top-shelf syndicated veterans, many of which were completely in reruns.

For example, in an extremely rare occurrence, the five most popular magazine strips were all hit with losses. Inside Edition erased 9% from the prior frame; Entertainment Tonight fell 14%; Access Hollywood sank 13%; TMZ tumbled 14%; and Extra pulled back 17%.

Elsewhere in access, the three longest-running game shows were losers, with Jeopardy fading 5%, Family Feud dipping 2% and Wheel of Fortune slowing 8%.

Daytime, which had to deal with college football preemptions in addition to holiday schedule shifts, wasn’t spared the downdraft. Although not a single chat show in the top six was able to move up week to week, three managed to score double-digit year-to-year improvement: Kelly Clarkson grew 13% from the same week last year to a 0.9 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating; Drew Barrymore shot up 60% to a 0.8; and Tamron Hall nailed a hefty 17% increase.

Live with Kelly and Ryan had no trouble remaining the top talker for the 32nd consecutive week, although it gave back 11% to a 1.6.

The competition was close was close among the rookie gabfests, which continued to exceed rating expectations despite being in repeats. Both Jennifer Hudson and Sherri, which were given enthusiastic early renewals today, preserved a 0.6, while Karamo was not far behind at its season high 0.4.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Compared to the prior week the first-run strip among the top 10 notching the most favorable Nielsen verdict was Hot Bench, which barreled ahead to a six-week high 1.3.

  • Live with Kelly and Ryan (0.6, -14% from the week before)

AGAIN, NO ONE brings up how Drews show is broken into 2 segments now which is the ONLY reason its ratings are increased. They count DOUBLE and it is unfair to all the other shows.
