The Africa Channel Unveils Black History Month Lineup

The Africa Channel announced a portion of its Black History Month lineup fueled by the theme of Black Ambition, Excellence and Identity. Heading it will be a sneak peek of the channel’s new original reality series African Royale which follows one Nigerian heiress’ journey as she navigates a life and career while carving out an identity as both an African and an American in Black America.

Narendra Reddy, The Africa Channel chief operating officer, said: “In celebration of Black History Month, The Africa Channel has assembled a celebratory and varied roster of programming. The sneak peek of African Royale represents a new benchmark for our channel as we continue to deliver on our commitment of increasing our original production slate.

“Shining a light on Abimbola Fernandez and her revelatory journey in African Royale, combined with the premiere of the compelling documentary series The Rising celebrating Black Athletes worldwide and our returning History of Africa series sponsored by Walmart, embraces our mandate of building bridges between today’s Africa and the global viewing audience while celebrating and examining the power of Black ambition, excellence and identity.”

An overview of The Africa Channel’s Black History Month lineup:

African Royale (1×30) debuts with a world premiere sneak peek Monday, Jan. 30, at 9 p.m. ET, repeating Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9 p.m. ET throughout February. Starring Her Imperial Highness Abimbola “Bim” Fernandez, African Royale will give viewers an inside look at her life as she navigates the contemporary cultural connections new generations of Black Americans are discovering today. The new original series is being coproduced by TAC Studios, The Africa Channel’s in-house production and distribution arm, and Mike Aho Productions.

The Rising (26×30) — New Episodes Air throughout BHM Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET and Sundays at 7 p.m. ET. A documentary series celebrating the contributions of Black athletes worldwide — those who have endured and broken the barriers of discrimination and inequality to make an impact, beyond their sports. The Rising will provide inspirational programming during and well beyond Black History Month in February for its celebration of this significant segment of the sports community.

The History of Africa (20×60) — Starts Jan. 31, airing Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET and Saturdays and Sundays at 8 p.m. ET. Sudanese-British journalist, Zeinab Badawi travels across Africa and explores the continent’s history from the beginning of time to the modern era with the goal to “set history straight.” This is a story the whole family can enjoy together during Black History Month — a rich telling of Africa’s triumphs, proud heritage, and contributions to the world dating all the way back to the origins of mankind.
