Nexstar’s New Calls, Net. Set In Terre Haute

WFXW, the Mission-owned, Nexstar-run Terre Haute, Ind., former Fox affiliate, becomes WAWV and brings ABC back to the market after 16 years on Sept. 1.

WAWV, the ABC affiliate in Terre Haute, Ind. (DMA 152), today announced its local programming lineup effective with its switch from its previous Fox affiliation as WFXW to ABC on Sept. 1, 2011.

WAWV is owned by Mission Broadcasting and operated by Nexstar Broadcasting through a joint services agreement with Nexstar’s WTWO, the market’s NBC affiliate.

Nexstar dropped its Fox affiliation in June after the two couldn’t come to terms over Fox’s proposed programming fees. Rather than pay the fees, Nexstar also gave up Fox affiliations in three other markets — Evansville, Ind.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; and Springfield, Mo.

Tim Sturgess, Nexstar VP-GM commented on the change: “We are thrilled to bring the local ABC affiliate back to the Wabash Valley after a 16-year hiatus. Since the news was first announced to the public on June 28, a steady stream of Valley viewers have reached out to thank us for bringing local ABC back to the region.

“WAWV and WTWO will broadcast the market’s most compelling local news and will feature fresh, innovative programming to address the evolving dynamics of local viewer interests,” Sturgess continued. “In addition, our mobile and Web services platform, mywabashvalley.com, will offer more opportunities for our viewers to access the information they need and entertainment they want on-the-go. The strength of the ABC Television Network combined with our additional community content will provide a unique multi-platform option for local and national advertisers.”

WAWV will launch a full-hour local newscast, WAWV Live at Five, anchored by Tom McClanahan, effective Sept. 1. WAWV Live at Five will air weekdays at 5 p.m. In addition to ABC’s Good Morning America, The View, One Life to Live and General Hospital, WAWV daytime programming will feature The Chew, a new cooking/lifestyle show that debuts Sept. 26, airing weekdays at 1 p.m.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

WAWV will move the former 10 p.m. weekday newscast online at mywabashvalley.com. The station says this will be the first live, streaming newscast in the market.
