Life After Oprah: Talkers Strong In Week One

In the week ending Sept. 18, Dr. Phil started its 10th season with a 3.9 rating – a 63% increase from the week before – its highest season premiere since 2004. Dr. Oz came in second with a 2.9 season premiere week, up 61% from the week before. And Ellen’s rating climbed 53% percent from the previous week to 2.3, making it her strongest season premiere ever.

Dr. Phil emerged as the big winner among talkers in national syndication ratings during the 2011-12 season’s opening week, taking over the reins from Oprah as the No. 1 rated talk show in the country.

In the week ending Sept. 18, Dr. Phil started its 10th season with 3.9 rating – a 63% increase from the week before – its highest season premiere since 2004. Dr. Oz rated second with a 2.9 season premiere week, up 61% from the week before.

Ellen’s rating climbed 53% percent from the previous week to 2.3, making it her strongest season premiere ever. Live With Regis and Kelly, which premiered the week ending Sept. 11, slipped 4% to 2.5. Maury, which premieres this week, also fell 4% to a 2.2.

National ratings are being reprocessed for Anderson, the most anticipated newcomer to the talk arena. In metered markets, however, the show jumped 25% during its second week to a 1.5 rating, or 4 share.

Court Shows

Judge Judy ruled supreme, coming in as the top rated show in all of syndication as well as among court shows. Judy’s ratings jumped 8% to a 6.6. Judge Joe Brown gained 7% to a 2.9, while People’s Court fell 5% to a 2. Divorce Court, Judge Alex and Judge Mathis all rated 1.6.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Magazines

Ratings for every show in the magazine category grew during the week.

Category leader Entertainment Tonight jumped 6% to a 3.4 rating and Extra grew by 14% to a 1.6 rating. Inside Edition rose by 7% to a 3.0, and Access Hollywood’s rating grew by 5% to 2.0.  TMZ added 12% to a 1.9 rating and The Insider rose by 7% to a 1.5.

Game Shows

Longtime favorite Wheel of Fortune stayed flat at 6.1, while Jeopardy dropped 12% to 4.6.  Family Feud rose 8% to a 2.6, while Who Wants to be a Millionaire rose 4% to 2.4.

Off-Net Sitcoms

Two and a Half Men lead the pack, with its rating rising 8% to 6.4.

Family Guy added 3% to a 4.0 and How I Met Your Mother also jumped 3% to a 3.6. Meantime, Seinfeld lost 4% to a 2.5 rating, while The Office and Everybody Loves Raymond both remained flat with 2.4 ratings.

National ratings are not available for the off-net sitcoms that debuted the week of Sept. 19. However in metered markets, Big Bang Theory rated 1.7 with a 3 share, 30 Rock pulled a 0.8 rating with a 2 share and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia earned a 0.4 rating with a 1 share.

Off-Net Weeklies

Criminal Minds became the leading off-net weekly hour drama, rising 12% to a 2.8. Monk remained unchanged at 2.6 and The Closer rose 5% to 2.2.

The previous category leader, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, fell 49% to a 2.1, tying Without a Trace which dropped 13% to a 2.1 rating.
