New Philly TV Set To Launch This Week

WACP Atlantic City will begin broadcasting on ch. 4 on Oct. 23, carrying primarily infomercials and shopping, along with children’s and public affairs. It will be available on most Comcast, Dish and DirectTV systems.

Western Pacific Broadcast, owner of WACP Atlantic City, N.J. (DMA 4), announced that its WACP will begin broadcasting on Oct. 23.

WACP’s ch. 4 frequency was auctioned to Western Pacific Broadcast by the FCC in 2011 to fill a void in the VHF band created by another broadcaster’s conversion to digital. WACP is licensed to Atlantic City and serves the Philadelphia market.

The initial programming lineup will be primarily infomercials and shopping, along with children’s and public affairs. WACP said it is “actively exploring all market programming opportunities.”

“We are excited to be a local broadcaster in the nation’s fourth-largest market. In today’s multichannel universe, channel position is critical, and there has not been a full power V [station] created in the Philadelphia DMA in over 50 years,” said Kevin O’Kane of WPB.

WACP will be on ch. 4 on most Comcast, Dish and DirectTV systems, and ch. 789 on the Comcast HD tier.

Western Pacific Broadcast is a division of Richland Towers in Tampa, Fla. Richland Towers is an owner, operator and manager of multi-tenant facilities serving the U.S. broadcast and telecommunications industries since 1996.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

WPB also owns WMDE Seaford, Del., and LPTV stations in the Eastern U.S.

There hasn’t been a full power V anywhere in the U.S. since 2009. I know hams who legally run more ERP than some of the VHF DTV stations…

Not True. There are a number of High V’s running nationally..check the database…in South Florida, Fox (Ch7 and ABC (ch 10) affiliates both are full power with very good coverage. Palm Beach market has two as well. What I would NOT do is use low V…too much impulse noise interference. ABC O&O’s learned this the hard way…

WVEC, the ABC affiliate in the Hampton Roads (Tidewater) region of Virginia, is a full-powered VHF station on 13 (the same network it had before the DTV switch).

This channel has been broadcasting nonstop infomercial dreckage in the Philly area for a couple months now. We occasionally watch to laugh at the used car clown salesmen.

BTW, the digital signal comes in strong in the Philly northern suburbs near Trenton. This channel position makes this property extremely attractive to a programmer interested in doing real programming. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this station flipped very very soon.
