WHO Salutes John Bachman During Final Week

Long-time WHO Des Moines, Iowa (DMA 72) newsman John Bachman will anchor his final newscast this Friday night, Nov. 9, on Channel 13 News at 10. The station is commemorating the occasion all week long with special features and some surprises in and out of its evening newscasts. In addition, Bachman will host his final edition of The Insiders this Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m..  And Sunday night, Channel 13’s Dan Winters puts Bachman in the hot seat for “3 Minutes in the Chair” during Channel 13 News at 10.

In January, WHO announced that the 25-year WHO veteran anchor would retire in November. Bachman’s 40 year broadcast journalism career includes interviews with six U.S. presidents, the Silver Circle from the National Television Academy and the Alfred I. duPont- Columbia University Silver Baton and several Emmy Awards for Best Newscast.

The station promoted eight-year WHO anchor/reporter Dan Winters to succeed Bachman at the anchor desk.

“I’ve been so fortunate to anchor at WHO-HD for a quarter of a century! Iowans not only helped raise my family but continued to watch all those newscasts!  I’ve been especially blessed to work with such outstanding colleagues. Ed, like a younger brother, has been at my side for more years than we both care to admit. Keith keeps all of us laughing while being unparalleled at reporting sports. And Erin’s many talents have made her a trusted partner in anchoring. I’m also indebted to the station management for their complete support and for allowing me to personally plan this retirement.

“Now it’s time for my wife Barb and me to visit the grandchildren during the Iowa winters, while viewers will get the opportunity to enjoy Winters—Dan, that is. He will bring energy, professionalism and drive to our newscasts.”
