WSCV Cancer Telethon Raises Over $4.5 Million

On June 1, Telemundo affiliate WSCV Miami (DMA 16) produced its 15th annual telethon to benefit Liga Contra el Cancer (League Against Cancer), Miami’s nonprofit organization that, since 1975, provides free diagnostic screenings and lifesaving medical treatment to cancer patients who don’t have the necessary financial resources or insurance coverage to battle the decease.

By the end of the seven-hour live telecast, $4,476,489 in pledges had been received, and this figure had grown to $4,550,000 by Monday morning as more donations were counted.

“We are proud of our continued support of Liga Contra el Cancer because this annual telethon raises the funds that represent the means by which the organization can continue to provide the medical services and specialized care that will save so many lives in our community,” said Jorge Carballo, WSCV president-GM.

This year’s telethon was dedicated to the memory of Celia Cruz who until her death in 2013 was a major supporter of Liga Contra el Cancer and its most recognizable star.
