Good Gains By Talkers, Courts And Games

Those genres posted many solid performances in the week ending Jan. 26, while new season highs were reported by magazines Inside Edition, Access Hollywood and Dish Nation.

Talk shows were extremely hot in the final session before the February sweep. In fact, all of the top-tier talkers advanced in the week ending Jan. 26.

Dr. Phil improved both week to week and year to year, finishing first for the 22nd time in the last 25 weeks. Phil also spiked 18% among women 25-54 to a first-place 2.0 in the demo.

Live with Kelly and Michael took second place and jumped 14% from last year, while Ellen remained third.

Other talkers with strong gains included Dr. Oz, which shot up 17% among women 25-54, Maury and Rachael Ray.

Steve Harvey matched its series high and surged 25% from last year, the most of anything in talk, while Wendy Williams hit a new series high and grew 13% from last year.

Queen Latifah ruled the freshman class and main rival Bethenny rose 13% in households and 17% among women 25-54. Bethenny also won its time slot in seven of the top 15 markets among women 18-34.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

In access, many magazines were solid performers. Moving up from last year were Entertainment Tonight, which climbed 3% year to year; Access Hollywood, which leaped 11% to a new season high; Extra, which soared 20%, the largest increase in the category; and The Insider, which added 7%. In addition, Dish Nation set both a new season high and a nine-month high.

All of the game shows reported ratings gains from the previous week, with Family Feud hitting a record 6.1 among households (as well as a post-1988 high of 3.1 among women 25-54), and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire recording a new season high.

Among the newcomers to off-net, Community had the most growth, climbing 25% and matching its season high; while Modern Family continued to lead the rookies, also equaling its season high.

The week’s top nationally rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Dr. Phil (2.0, +18% from the week before)
  •  Ellen (1.9, +12%)
  • Live with Kelly and Michael (1.7, +6%)
  • Dr. Oz (1.4, +17%), tied with Maury (1.4, unchanged)
  • Wendy Williams (1.3, +8%)
  • Steve Harvey (1.2, +9%)
  • Steve Wilkos (1.0, unchanged)
