The NAB’s annual State Leadership Conference is designed to offer legislative and legal updates and get broadcasters from around the country to talk to their congressional representatives.
Broadcasters To Learn, Lobby In Washington
Next week’s NAB State Leadership Conference (Feb. 24-26) in Washington will offer attendees an update on legislative issues before Congress, as well as an opportunity to network with fellow broadcasters.
It opens on Monday, Feb. 24, with an evening reception.
The Tuesday agenda includes remarks from NAB President Gordon Smith; sessions on Lobbying 101 and government relations/legal briefing; and remarks from FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn, Senator Amy Klobuchar (Minn.) and Representative Bob Goodlatte (Va.).
Wednesday will feature a breakfast followed by Capitol Hill office visits throughout the day and an “After Hill” happy hour.
The gathering takes place at The J.W. Marriot.

Lobbying is necessary and there are a great many legislators on Capitol Hill who are sympathetic to television broadcasters. But the NAB and broadcast groups better have a war chest ready as they may end up having to sue the FCC in order to force the agency to respect both the letter of the law of the Spectrum Act as well as the regulations that are on their own books. As it is, the Commission has shown a dangerous tendency to either ignore or re-imagine these laws to fit their agenda.

Come to think of it, the FCC is long overdue for being sued. After all, it was John Dingell back in July 2012 who warned little Julius that if the Commission didn’t soon release its repacking model (aka, the AOM) it risked a lawsuit. The former chairman promised, “The commission will make public all the information ‘relevant’ to the auctions” as soon as it received authorization for the auction. Well, the FCC got it and we’re still waiting.

if newsrooms had not become puppets of their republican advertisers and tea party anchors who dont want to pay taxes on their 6 figure salaries, TV stations would not need lobbyists. Just go back and look at the insane Face the Nation interview with that Psycho Jim DeMint from last Sunday. This man was allowed to lie like a cheap rug and was never called out by the show host. This was a total embarrassment to news broadcasting.
