RTDNA Hogan Award Goes To Harvey Nagler

Longtime CBS Radio News Vice President Harvey Nagler is the winner of the Radio Television Digital News Association’s 2014 John F. Hogan Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes an individual’s contributions to the journalism profession and freedom of the press. “We’re proud to honor one of the driving forces behind radio news in America,” said Mike Cavender, executive director of RTDNA. “Harvey Nagler is a champion of quality broadcast journalism.”

“The format and sound of today’s radio newscasts owe a lot to Harvey Nagler,” said Chris Carl, chairman of RTDNA. “The many awards and accolades earned by CBS Radio News are proof that he stands for innovation and integrity.”

The award will be presented on Friday, Sept. 5, at 4:30 p.m. CT at the Excellence in Journalism 2014 national convention, at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville. The ceremony will be followed by a reception.

Nagler was named VP, CBS Radio News in January 1998. He is responsible for CBS News radio operations worldwide, including news gathering and programming and its relationship with its thousands of affiliated stations around the country. Nagler had served as GM of CBS Radio News (1997-98).

In March, 2010, Nagler was honored with the RTNDF’s First Amendment Service Award, which is presented to a person of distinction who works in an off-air, management capacity.

Prior to joining CBS Radio News, Nagler was director, news and programming for WCBS-AM New York (1987-97). Nagler developed and implemented several practices which have since been adopted or imitated by hundreds of stations across the country, including the slogan, “traffic and weather, together on the ‘eights’ ” and “guaranteed weather.”
