James Smith To Retire As KSLA GM

He's leaving Raycom Media’s CBS affiliate KSLA Shreveport, La., after a broadcasting career that began in Corpus Christi, Texas, and  spanned four decades.

After 10 years as vice president and general manager of Raycom Media’s CBS affiliate KSLA Shreveport, La. (DMA 83), James Smith has decided to retire. Smith joined KSLA in March of 2006.

“James demonstrated excellent leadership and dedication to KSLA and Raycom Media,” said Paul McTear, Raycom Media president-CEO. “I wish him all the best in his retirement.”

Shreveport was Smith’s fifth stop in a broadcasting career that has spanned four decades. He graduated from the University of Texas and began his career as a reporter and photographer at KZTV in Corpus Christi, Texas.

He also served as news director and anchor in Bryan-College Station, Texas.

He was news director and anchor at KPLC Lake Charles, La., for 19 years. Under his leadership, the news department received numerous awards from the Louisiana Associated Press.

Smith was also VP-GM of WWAY Wilmington, N.C., from 1999 to 2006.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

At the 2016 Prestige Awards luncheon ceremony earlier this year, the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters honored Smith as the Broadcaster of the Year.

“It has been a privilege to have been part of broadcasting for the past 41 years,” Smith said.

Smith and his wife, Kathy, plan to retire to their hometown of San Antonio, Texas, to be closer to relatives.
