WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

Two Weeks In A Row For ‘Kelly And Ryan’

Although most daytime shows were shredded by massive preemptions for coronavirus news coverage throughout the session ending April 5, Live with Kelly and Ryan was a standout, holding on to almost all of its large increase in the previous frame and easily topping the talkers for a second straight week.

The morning show favorite improved 9% from last year at this time to a first-place 2.5 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating, and attracted a whopping average of more than 3.5 million viewers each day even though it aired only four original episodes during the week.

Season-to-date talk leader Dr. Phil was in reruns for part of the week and was hit with numerous preemptions, but nevertheless hung tough at a second-place 2.1.

Further back, Ellen DeGeneres dropped 6% to a 1.6 in third.

The only first-run strip with a double-digit gain was highly regarded rookie Tamron Hall, with a 10% leap to a 1.1 which matched the show’s biggest rating ever. In addition, it had its most-watched week yet, surging 19% over its season average to 1.485 million daily viewers.

Significantly, Tamron began featuring new segments originating from her home and focusing on COVID-19, in addition to encore features from previous shows.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Kelly Clarkson, the season’s overall No. 1 newcomer, was also sharp, holding its ground at a 1.3 despite being in repeats on all five days.

The runaway leader, by far, over all daytime shows was the incomparable Judge Judy with a 6.3, which was more than twice the rating of anything else in the daypart.

Elsewhere, Access Hollywood was the biggest upside mover among magazines with a 9% surge to a 1.2.

Inside Edition, which led the genre, was unchanged at a 3.2, finishing just ahead of sister show Entertainment Tonight, which rose 3% to a 3.1.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Live with Kelly and Ryan (1.2, -8% from the week before)
  • Dr. Phil (0.8, -11%), tied with Ellen DeGeneres (0.8, unchanged)
  • Maury (0.7, unchanged)
  • Kelly Clarkson (0.6, unchanged), tied with Steve Wilkos (0.6, +20%)

In the household rating rankings that follow, % change is from the previous week; * indicates a new season-high rating; ** indicates a new season low; NC indicates no change from the previous week; NA means not applicable.
