‘Empire’ Holds Steady To Top Wednesday
Empire was even in the Wednesday overnight ratings, allowing it to remain the top-rated show of the night. Airing at 8 p.m. on Fox, Empire drew a 1.8 rating in adults 18-49 and 5.8 million viewers. It’s closest competition for the night was Survivor on CBS, which slipped a little in the demo from last week to a 1.5 but was the most-watched show of the night with 7.9 million viewers.

Discovery today named Allison Page, president, HGTV and Food Network. Courtney White has been upped to EVP, HGTV and Food Network, reporting to Page. In addition, Discovery has added Travel Channel to executive Henry Schleiff’s portfolio of networks, effective immediately. The moves are part of the restructuring following the company’s acquisition of Scripps Networks Interactive, and fall under the leadership of Chief Lifestyle Brands Officer Kathleen Finch.
In the most recent week, Walt Disney TV networks fell 13% on sports viewing. Disney had the biggest share of sports viewing in 2017, at 33%. Fox TV networks grew 9% due to baseball programming in the most recent week; it had a 21% share in 2017.
Capitalizing on its staggering Oscar season success, Fox Searchlight Pictures Presidents Nancy Utley and Steve Gilula are branching into the television business. They’ve Searchlight Television, making the company a 360-degree hub for creative talent and broadening the variety of projects produced under the Searchlight banner. David Greenbaum and Matthew Greenfield have been promoted to presidents of production for film and television.
‘Roseanne’ Stays On Top With 13.5M Viewers
ABC’s revival of Roseanne was the top show of Tuesday night in the overnight ratings for the third week in a row, despite once again being down double digits from the previous week. Airing at 8 p.m., Roseanne drew a 3.4 rating in adults 18-49 and 13.5 million viewers. That is down approximately 13% in the demo and 12% in total viewers compared to last week, when the show drew a 3.9 and 15.4 million viewers.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. endured years of mockery for his interest in a niche event that’s essentially a series of roster transactions. Today it’s second only to the NFL playoffs on the football calendar in terms of fan interest and media coverage.

The game was seen by 16 million viewers on TBS, TNT and Tru TV last week, Nielsen said. That’s down sharply from the 23 million who saw North Carolina beat Gonzaga in the 2017 finals. The CW has set its summer 2018 premiere dates for new drama series The Outpost and Burden of Truth and returning series My Last Days (above), Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Penn & Teller: Fool Us and Masters Of Illusion. In addition the season finales for Life Sentence and Supergirl are set for Friday, June 14, and Monday, June 18, respectively.
The list of entertainment programs making the nominations cut includes CBS All Access’ Star Trek: Discovery, NBC’s The Good Place, Netflix’s American Vandal, FX’s Legion, HBO’s Insecure and Freeform’s Alias Grace. Other contenders gaining kudos momentum with the Peabody noms include Netflix’s One Day at a Time, Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale and AMC’s Better Call Saul.
