AMC Networks is closing in on a deal to acquire a sizable stake in BBC America for about $200 million. The deal is expected to come together by the end of October. AMC Networks is believed to be grabbing just under 50% of the channel that is the Beeb’s namesake outpost in the U.S.
AMC Networks Inc., the cable programmer controlled by the Dolan family, is in talks to acquire almost 50% of BBC America, BBC Worldwide’s U.S. channel, people with knowledge of the matter say.
AMC Networks said Monday that it has temporarily extended a carriage deal with Time Warner Cable as the two sides negotiate a renewal of the contract that expired at midnight on Dec. 31.
The companies announced that they have a pact to keep the channels on the phone giant’s video system past the end of December, when the current contract expires. While the companies didn’t disclose specific terms, AMC says that it’s a “long-term agreement” that “recognizes the value of our networks.”
The Dish Network blackout has cast a cloud over AMC Networks’ growth prospects, coming a year after the company was spun out of Cablevision as a stand-alone company.
