AMC Pitches All 5 Nets, Unified Buying
AMC Networks kicked off its spring ad sales efforts at an event Thursday night in New York that grouped all of its five networks under one upfront umbrella for the first time. They are: AMC, SundanceTV, BBC America, WEtv and IFC. The theme of this upfront was audience engagement and quality content.
AMC Networks, whose shows include The Walking Dead, is planning to launch a commercial-free online video streaming service aimed at millennial TV subscribers, two sources familiar with the situation tell Reuters. Unlike standalone streaming options from Time Warner’s HBO and from CBS, AMC’s would be exclusively available to consumers who subscribe to a cable TV package. AMC is doing this, the sources say, as a way to support the traditional cable industry at a time when many younger consumers are increasingly cutting the cord.
In an overall challenging ratings year for basic-cable entertainment networks, AMC, Discovery and Cartoon Network have gone against the grain to emerge as the standout performers of 2015.

The critically beloved AMC drama, never a juggernaut in the ratings, set personal bests in its key measure on Sunday night. The hour-and-change premiere telecast averaged 3.3 million viewers. Of that haul, 1.7 million were in the show’s targeted adults 25-54 demo, a best, and 1.4 million were adults 18-49. All three stats were highs for a finale.
This incomparable drama set in the 1960s New York advertising world concluded its seven-season run Sunday night on AMC with a resolution that rang true to its spirit and likely left its devotees satisfied, even as they bade it farewell with regret.

Dead averaged 15.8 million total viewers, according to Nielsen overnights, including 10.4 million adults 18-49. The 90-minute finale started at 9 p.m.
AMC President Charlie Collier had one major job when it came to marketing the final season of Mad Men: “To put it in the hall of fame.” The second leg of the hit drama’s seventh and final season begins next month, and while the show has already been a ratings bonanza and critical darling, AMC is giving it an extra marketing push through the finish line. One task has been to excite Madison Avenue types. After all, the show is about the advertising industry.

“The entertainment industry will be driven by the television business and not the movie business,” said Sony Pictures Television President Steve Mosko last night at a Chapman University panel session. TV used to be the industry’s “bastard child,” but it is now a creative mecca. “I think the motion picture business is still a great business, but there’s just so much television being produced — and so much good television being produced.” Execs of AMC and Netflix also appeared on the panel.
