U.S. Ad-Supported Subscriptions Surpass 100M

Combined U.S. subscriptions to the ad-supported tiers of major streaming services surpassed 100 million as of June, according to new data from Ampere Analysis. Hulu, Peacock and Paramount+ represent the bulk of ad-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) subscriptions, but uptake for the new ad tiers of Netflix and Disney+ are showing strong growth.

Almost Half Of Internet Users Say They Watch Little To No Broadcast TV Anymore

In just two years, the proportion of internet users claiming to watch little to no linear TV in a typical day grew 22% to almost half (45%) according to a report just published by Ampere Analysis. Based on proprietary consumer research carried out with 54,000 adults aged 18-64 across 28 markets worldwide, the findings show that while younger groups are most disengaged with broadcast TV, 35% of those claiming to watch no linear TV were over 45 years old — a rise from 28% in 1Q 2017.

Streamers To Spend $8.5B On Sports Rights In 2023

The sports streaming market is poised for continued growth in 2023, with SVOD services expected to spend $8.5 billion globally on sports rights, according to new data from Ampere Analysis.  The rise in spend — a 64% increase from $5.2 billion in 2022 — is indicative of more general entertainment services leveraging live sports to stand out from other streaming competitors. The NFL’s multi-year deals with Amazon and YouTube arguably shifted the tide for sports streaming, Ampere noted, as both agreements represent the largest signed sports streaming deals to-date.

Tubi Spearheads Surging AVOD Use

17% of U.S. internet users viewed one or more AVOD services in the past month,  vs. just 13% in the third quarter of 2019, according to a survey conducted by UK research firm Ampere Analysis. The research company says Tubi, recently purchased by Fox for $440 million, is leading the usage surge, based in large part by its extra-large content library, which features more than 29,000 movies and TV show episodes.
