With CBS News’ home base in New York closed due to coronavirus, CBS owned stations are helping get the national newscasts out to viewers. The weekend of March 21-22, CBS Weekend News will be produced out of Dallas, with KTVT staffers filling key roles in the production.

It’s difficult to gauge how much the Time Warner Cable blackouts are affecting CBS-owned stations. But Sunday, three large stations experienced notable week-to-week drops in primetime. Household ratings by one metric dropped 27% in the New York market and 14% in Los Angeles, while falling 12% in Dallas.

WCCO Image Spot Eases Anchor Transition

With the help of its “Always” image campaign, WCCO Minneapolis successfully transitioned from retiring anchor Don Shelby to the new husband-wife team of Frank Vascellero and Amelia Santaniello. The campaign managed to remind viewers of the station’s long history and dominance in the market without suggesting it was “old and stodgy.” This is the first in a series profiling winners of PromaxBDA LocalAwards for excellence in TV station promos.

An alternative to microwave, bonded cellular technology loaded in a backpack is allowing the CBS O&Os to broadcast HD images in near real time from virtually anywhere. “This technology has made us truly mobile, on foot as well as in the vehicles,” says news chief David Friend.

CBS O&Os Appoint Syndication Buyer

He is John Budkins, who has worked for the past seven years on the other end of the syndication business as CBS Television Distribution’s VP of sales for the Northeast region. He assumes his new role on Dec. 13.
