Conan O’Brien Ends TBS Latenight Show With Snark, Gratitude

“Try to do what you love with people you love, and if you can manage that, it’s the definition of heaven on Earth,” he said, marking the end of his third latenight show over 28 years. It’s a tenure second only to Johnny Carson’s 30 years on Tonight. O’Brien’s next venture is a weekly variety series for HBO Max, set to arrive in 2022 with an as-yet unannounced format.

TBS Doubling Down To Boost ‘Conan’

TBS’s pricey Conan O’Brien experiment is flopping—and is about to get even more expensive.In the nine months since Conan‘s debut, TBS has canceled its only other late-night show, George Lopez’s Lopez Tonight, and viewership of Conan has tumbled, by about 60% since its high-profile debut last fall. Despite O’Brien’s shrinking audience, TBS is doubling down on the red-haired comedian, paying for costly lead-in programming in an attempt to protect its investment.

Ratings are the best revenge. And if these numbers hold, “Conan” had a very sweet debut for TBS. Conan’s new TBS show scored a 2.8 rating among Nielsen’s 56 metered markets. In contrast, Leno earned a 2.7 rating, Letterman drew 2.5, and Kimmel received a 1.7.
