Daytime Emmys Look For Soaps Alternatives

There are four network daytime dramas left. In a year, or two, or five, it’s conceivable there could be fewer; it’s unlikely there’ll be more. The Daytime Emmy Awards depend heavily on the daytime dramas, both for the glamour of the actors on the red carpet and for the fervent loyalty of their fans. Without soaps, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences might still give out awards, but it would have a hard time attracting an audience.

Bob Mauro Named President Of NATAS

Former CBS and Leo Burnett Worldwide exec Bob Mauro has been named president of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the New York-based group that administers Emmy awards that fall outside the primetime scope of the West Coast-based Television Academy. Top of Mauro’s list is likely to be landing a new TV deal for the annual Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony, which wound up airing only as a webcast this past June.

Daytime Emmys Backstage Banter Turns Dark

The women who hosted the Emmy pre-show Sunday appeared largely ignorant about the actors and series that were being honored, instead unleashing attempts at bawdy humor that made sport of topics including rape and an actor’s race. Their efforts made the usual red-carpet banter look scholarly by contrast.

 

Daytime Emmy Wins For DeGeneres, Harvey

CBS, which received eight creative arts Daytime Emmys for technical achievements at a ceremony last week, emerged as the network leader with a total of 14 awards after Sunday’s ceremony. PBS received a combined 13 awards, with six for HUB Network; five for TOLN.com; four for ABC and three for NBC.

As a reflection of dwindling interest in soaps and other pre-primetime fare, this year’s Daytime Emmy Awards will be shown only online — not on television. The 41st annual ceremony will be live streamed on DaytimeEmmys.com, beginning at 5 p.m. ET on June 22.

The Daytime Emmy Awards have settled on a date and a location — now all they need is a TV deal. The 41st ceremony will be held June 22 at the Beverly Hilton. The date had been in flux as the New York-based National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences shops for a new TV deal for the ceremony.

The kudosfest, still negotiating a home for this year’s telecast, has switched networks almost annually for four decades and has been beset by a 20-year ratings slide. Case in point: In 1993, the broadcast garnered 22 million viewers. Last year, viewers of the HLN telecast numbered 913,000.
