It’s been 25 years since the Steven Bochco and David Milch cop drama helped change TV storytelling, ushering in a new era of more sophisticated, commercially successful small screen that eventually led to its new “golden age.” And it also altered the Emmy landscape: In 1994, NYPD Blue landed 27 nominations, a feat that wouldn’t be topped until this year by Game of Thrones.
It will be the first time since 1994 that a Governors Award is not presented, and only the second time since the advent of the special honor in 1978.
The Television Academy has rejiggered the Interactive Media award categories for the 69th Emmy Awards — aiming to bring new and innovative digital approaches to TV storytelling into the tent.

For all that was new and different and—for lack of a better word—revolutionary about the Emmys, they were also a reminder that in many ways, it’s the establishment that’s winning, epitomized by HBO taking home 14 statuettes. Combined with its Creative Emmy wins last week, HBO notched 43 awards overall, which is one less than than CBS won in 1974, when it set the all-time record.
After years of complaints of staid and predictable voting, the Emmys have caught up with the stream of changes shaking up the TV business. Transparent, Amazon’s non-traditional series, is among this year’s most nominated shows.
